Primary Year Curriculum

The Phonics Academia School curriculum follows the framework of the Primary Years Program (PYP). The PYP recognizes that development and learning are interrelated. Your child will develop knowledge, skills, concepts, and attitudes which are relevant, engaging and challenging across subject areas.
The (PYP) is designed for children aged 6 - 11 and focused on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside, Curriculum for students in Grades 1 through 6 emphasizes basic skills in all subject areas and introduces higher level skills to challenge students and stimulate their interests and thinking. The curriculum fosters the concept that learning will be enjoyable and rewarding throughout students' lives.
Spans of six years is a carefully planned phase that seamlessly transitions children from Key Stage 3 and fully prepares them for their Secondary education.A subtle shift in the emphasis on reading at this stage moves from a focus on the children ‘learning to read’, to them ‘reading to learn.
We continue to follow a creative topic-based curriculum, which is carefully inter-linked with a daily English and Mathematics learning as well as a strong emphasis on the Urdu language.

SUBJECTS TO EXPECT

The PYP supports students’ efforts to gain understanding of the world and to function comfortably within it, and helps them establish personal values as a foundation upon which international-mindedness will develop and flourish.
PYP studies are based on 8 subject areas:

  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Personal / Social / Physical Education
  • Islamic Studies
  • Arabic Education (Till Grade 3)
  • Performing Arts (Music, Drama, Arts)
  • Brainstorming Games (Chess, Scrabble, Carom, Payday, Monopoly)
  • School Museum Learning
  • Clubs and Societies (zero period activities)

Key Stage 2: Year 1-3, Age 6-8

An approach focused on continuous progress is used in the core curricular areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies and Islamic education. In addition to the core subjects, students receive instruction in physical education, music, art, library media, and instructional technology. Our curriculum is clearly outlined by grade, and infused with an emphasis on the development of English fluency. The instructional program makes a variety of provisions to support individual learning differences and all teachers strive to meet the needs of all students.
Ongoing assessment ensures that each child's progress and development are continuous and meet predetermined standards. We encourage students to think independently, use their initiative and to participate in a meaningful and active manner in the learning process.
A selection of extra-curricular activities broadens the opportunities for students to enhance their natural abilities and to challenge themselves through development of new interest areas. Extra-curricular activities may include drama, choir, computers, art and design, a variety of sports activities and a number of school clubs.

Key Stage 3: Year 4-6, Age 9-11

Key Stage 3 covers the transition from the more structured environment of the Primary school and prepares students for the independent study. Development of leadership qualities and skills is put into practical application in Key Stage 3 providing each student the opportunity to share class and school responsibilities that nurture organizational skills, co-operation, accountability and team spirit.
By the end of Year 6, our aim is that all students will have gained a well-rounded education. They will have matured through understanding and character development, have developed articulate expression and confidence and will be well prepared for their secondary education
