Primary Information Guide

PATHWAYS FROM GRADE 1 TO GRADE 6

Primary School students follow an academic program that is organized in the same way throughout grades 1-6. This structure allows students to develop confidence within a familiar framework and provides for the reinforcement and spiraling acquisition of skills and knowledge. Students become increasingly autonomous as they move towards the close of the Secondary School Program. This very special moment is highlighted by a grade 8 graduation ceremony where students’ learning is celebrated through portfolios of exemplary work and achievement awards, shared with parents and Faculty.

AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO LEARNING

In addition to its academic program, Phonics Academia values the emotional and social needs of the child. The Primary School provides regular opportunities for students to engage in activities with a primary focus on collaboration across the age ranges and lead to a heightened knowledge of self and others. The activities include student-led assemblies, talks by outside speakers, special focus days arranged around a theme and day or residential trips. Recent themes and subjects that Primary School students have been exposed to are Children’s Rights, Anti-bullying, Earth Day and Book Day. These days are designed to raise awareness in global and cultural concerns and to address issues such as respect, self-control and making informed choices for a healthy life-style.

Other activities are organized and promoted by the Primary` School Student Council, made up of two elected representatives from each homeroom group

Introducing the PYP

Primary Years Program (PYP) is designed for students aged 6 to 11. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The PYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement. It builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in the EYC and prepares students to meet the academic challenges of the Secondary year curriculum (SYC)

Why Choose the PYP?

  • The PYP is flexible and can be adapted to children's interests and level of understanding
  • It can be integrated with other curriculum to ensure you're meeting statutory requirements, in a creative and engaging way
  • It offers simple but structured curriculum focused around subject, personal and international learning goals
  • PYP helps engage parents with learning, and to understand the relevance of learning in the classroom and at home

We take the approach that each child is unique, with special talents and abilities with an individual learning style. We acknowledge that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and believe that all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected. Local Field Trips support our studies and a wide range of co- curricular activities are enjoyed during school hours. Our learning environment is colorful and vibrant, enhanced by a well-resourced Library and ICT suite and the beautiful grounds we share.

We are aware that the length of time a student spends with us will vary according to individual circumstances and ensure our balanced curriculum and secure environment allows children to confidently enter and return to both national and international educational systems. We are sympathetic to the many challenges we know a new environment, country and school might bring to your children and your family. Above all we hope the Primary Years at Phonics Academia provides a happy secure environment where each and every one of us can achieve the success we deserve. We are proud of our provision and our achievements and we hope this is evident in the smiles on our faces!
